OSR and sages

In an old school game, odd symbols and awful omens call for sages - like the mendicant Realto, up north of Tenkeep. Though few know of him, many know Robert E. Howard’s Epemitreus, or Lovecraft’s Dr. Armitage - “behind the closed door of a shelf-lined room in Arkham.” Old School Essentials includes the sage in a chapter called, "Hired Help," listed between an oarsman and a sailor! Wages are 2,000 gold pieces/month. A sage's assiduity is a wonder. Armitage, for example,

...knew that the riddle was a deep and complex one; and that no simple mode could merit even a trial…he fortified himself massed in lore of cryptography; drawing upon the fullest resources of his own library, wading night after night amidst the arcane…

Oh, for an Epemitreus or Armitage! I know of an old sheet being passed around in TenKeep, but none can read it.
