OSR, a solo game, and Al Shief's adventure

Sometimes a solo game is a wonderful way to explore my campaign world and to meet new characters. Tonight I'll share a game, and maybe start a story. So, meet Al Shief, a thief out near TenKeep.

***

After some rough fighting near Silo Verde, the footpad Al Shief felt an emptiness in his stomach before the throbbing from an oozy place on his head. As night fell, he rose with the moon and marched several miles east, to the high dessert town "La Gama."

Hunger driven, Al spied open windows in sleepy adobe house. Seemed like an easy take for something to eat.

He moved into shadows to an open window.

    [Al's moved silently, 25%, but he rolled a 27].

Somebody's dog came-out jawing.

[Dog's reaction roll, 2d6, rolls a 5, "unfriendly, may attack"].

[Initiative, the dog gets the jump.]

Barking for everyone to hear, the damn dog lunges.

    [Attack roll d20, rolled an 18, hits, damage, d3, rolled a 6].

Al tore away and ran to a hollow. Fido turns back.

Sore, hungry Al tried again. Slinking around a leafy winter garden, he thought, "Something's got to be there," but he was still drowsy from pain in his head. He slept awhile and awakened after moonset.

Al Shief lit a torch.

The light could mean trouble:

[Wandering Monster roll, 2-in-6, he rolled a 2!]

[Wilderness wandering monster in desert, d8, I rolled an 8, "human"]

[Wilderness encounters for human, d12, I rolled a 6, "High-Level Magic User" -        rolled dice for level and he was tenth level].

Wow! I've never even thought about a tenth level magic user.

[Surprise roll for Al's wilderness encounters: d6, Al rolled a 2, and the magic user     rolled a 4]

    [Distance between parties, 4d6 x 10, 100 yards, 2d6, I rolled 11, so 110 yards.]

Thus, I imagined, a 10th-level magic user, reflecting on his new Dimension Door scroll, eased through the cool, night air...

(Unaware he was being watched by the magic user), Al Shieff, hurried across a garden, stole onions and a cabbage, then hurried back to the low point where the red-clad magic user rested.

Al considered running [but he was surprised]. He felt his longsword [still surprised]. Then, he listened to the voice of the magic user's dagger.

[This new thought cracked me up -  the magic user's dagger could talk.]

Al accepted the dagger's offer for a night walk with the magic user.

They climbed to a starry ledge where the magic user cooked some rabbit. Al ate rabbit and onions. He was feeling better. When questioned, Al said, "No, I've not seen any 'aberrations.'"

The magic user cast a "charm person" spell.

    [Al's saving throw, d20, was 15, but he rolled a 1].

The magic user suggested that, in the morning, Al should head down to La Gama, drop by Vuida's Inn, and see what's new."

Charmed but feeling better, Al said, "Sure no problem, meet you here tomorrow."

Thanks for reading.
